In September, we carried out our first automated inspection with Dhalion and the DJI M350 drone, and it was a great success.

What advantages does the DJI M350 bring? Well, it is similar to the M300 but its performance is slightly better. It has also an upgraded GPS receiver, which is a great benefit when out in the field. But the best thing will be using the new DJI remote handset, which includes a bigger screen. With the new handset, we will be able to remove our tablet, shedding unnecessary weight and making the job easier.

We, of course, will continue to deliver Dhalion for DJI M300s too, but now clients with the DJI M350 drone can also reach out to find out how to have best automation in place on their new drones.

Our development team is superb. If you need a specific solution they have proven again and again that they can do it and go beyond expectations in quality and time.

A big force behind our expansion has been our COO and Co-Founder, Dimitris Nikolaidis, who has been working hard to make this possible.

With our sights set on delivering inspections across Spain and Latin America, one of the challenges has been how to best support clients when there is a language barrier. Greek-born Dimitris has been learning Spanish to help tackle this!

When he’s not driving our growth. Dimitris can be found planning drone inspections, financial modelling and managing training.

On his favourite part about working at Perceptual Robotics, Dimitris said: “I really enjoy the variety of work, it is constantly changing and there’s always a new challenge. The fact that we are helping to improve and optimise wind and renewable energy is really exciting.”

Thanks to the development of improved path planning algorithms, which allow our drones to autonomously navigate around the tower and blades with precision and safety, our inspections now use LiDAR and cameras to accurately map the environment.

This development reduces the cost and time required for wind turbine tower inspections while increasing accuracy and guaranteeing full, repeatable inspection coverage.

These updates also make it easy for pilots to switch between blade and tower inspections, or to complete a combined inspection of blades and tower, by including an improved user interface. Customers can choose the type of inspection that suits their needs best.

As part of this process, Perceptual Robotics has also generalised and extended its data processing platform; it will soon be possible to process images from both tower and combined inspections.

New inspection data is continually being integrated into the platform to improve machine learning models and enhance the accuracy of automated damage location predictions. This will continue to improve the speed of processing, consistency of damage reporting and, ultimately, of the maintenance actions resulting from these inspections.

Customers can view the results from both inspections through our Web Portal or comprehensive maintenance reports. These processing and visualization tools allow customers an easy navigation through the structures and makes their life easier by providing them access to all of their data in a single location.

What better way to celebrate than to get the team together for an urban treasure hunt around Bristol? As a challenge and solution-oriented bunch, this was the perfect task for us to conquer together.

From Argentina to Greece to Madrid to Edinburgh, it was great for all of us to get together in person.

Alongside other industry experts, Kevin presented our unique approach to optimizing wind turbine blade inspection and maintenance using data mining and predictive analytics.

Using a wind-farm model, we estimated how much operators should inspect and repair wind turbines when considering budgets and annual energy production.

Our approach involves looking for the optimal inspection and maintenance strategy for wind farms by using our model of 50 wind turbines and analysing them over 36 months. The key outputs we used were annual energy production, inspection and maintenance costs.

Our models suggest that inspections should be carried out around the 15-month timeframe to achieve the lowest amount of energy losses and minimise costs, while also improving the lifetime efficiency of each turbine.

Using image segmentation to recognise the wind turbine in a photo, Daniel maps the image onto 3D models of the wind turbine that our drone has created.

Daniel’s work will help us improve how much human insight is required to analyse the damage and the client’s ability to make maintenance decisions based on where and what the damage is.

In the long term, it will provide insight into the kinds of damage happening to wind turbines, helping our clients make better decisions about repairing damage, and reducing downtime and costs.

When he’s not working on the project, Daniel’s day-to-day focus usually consists of researching and designing algorithms – helping to improve our data processing and implementing these solutions as software in the cloud.

Daniel said “My favourite part about working at Perceptual Robotics is just how driven everyone is to make things better and to make things happen.

“When faced with unsolved problems in the field, everyone will pull together to learn from the experience and figure out how to improve. At Perceptual Robotics we acknowledge that learning is part of the process which creates a culture of collaboration and understanding.
