However, the deployment costing depends on multiple parameters that, as an Independent Service Provider, you need to be mindful of if you want to be competitive and profitable at the same time.

Here are some crucial tips for calculating operations costs:

1️⃣ Number of Inspections: Determine the total number of inspections required. This sets the foundation for your cost estimation. The wind turbine models to be inspected play a crucial role as bigger models take more time to inspect. The first step is to calculate how many you can inspect per day, given the weather is nice and the ATs onsite are helpful. Which brings us to…

2️⃣ Inspection Days: Estimate the duration of each inspection. This impacts accommodation, subsistence, and possibly pilot fees.

3️⃣ Number of Pilots needed: Assess the number of skilled pilots necessary for smooth operations and their daily rates. Don’t underestimate this; skilled personnel are invaluable.

4️⃣Number of Deployments: Calculate how many times you need to deploy for inspections. Each deployment might incur different costs even though you might be inspecting within the same area but separate wind farms.

5️⃣ Travel Days per deployment: Factor in the number of days needed for travelling to and from the inspection site. Time is money!

⛽ Truck rental & Fuel cost: Consider expenses for renting trucks to transport equipment and fuel costs for vehicles.

🛣️ Other Travel Costs: Miscellaneous travel expenses like tolls, parking fees, etc., add up. Don’t overlook them.

🏨 Accommodation: Calculate accommodation costs for the duration of your deployments. Prioritise comfortable yet cost-effective options.

🍽️ Subsistence: Account for meals and other daily expenses during deployments. These costs accumulate quickly.

🔋 Drone transportation and fees: Include expenses for drone transport and customs fees. Having a valid carnet for your drone is essential for being able to quickly perform operations overseas.

💸 Total per inspection: Sum up all the above costs to get the total expenditure per inspection.

🚨 Standby Rate: In case of delays or unexpected downtime, have a standby rate to cover additional costs. This will be an ad hoc expense added to your total per inspection, per day.

🔄 Additional MOB/DEMOB Cost: Allocate funds for extra mobilisation/demobilisation days, as unforeseen circumstances may require additional time. Sudden changes in weather conditions can greatly affect these additional costs and being prepared is key. Make sure to communicate it clearly in your proposal.

Mastering operations costing for drone inspections ensures accurate budgeting and smooth operations. Remember, thorough planning leads to successful execution! 🎯

We had 4 blade experts review over 3,000 images from wind turbine blade inspections. One with support from AI suggestions. Not only did AI assistance significantly enhance the damage detection (finding 10% more damage), but it also provided a remarkable consistency in damage categorisation – an element that was noticed to vary among the BE models due to different considerations and priorities.

This highlights the value of AI in reinforcing the accuracy and objectivity in the process of wind turbine blade inspection. Merging AI into the system facilitates early damage identification leading to cost savings.

Once again, as we did at the WindEurope Workshop in Lyon last summer, we actively participate and contribute our unique perspectives and analytics to advance the progress of the wind industry.

One of the highlights of our trip was experiencing the amazing Pintxos in Bilbao, immersed in an international and European environment that fostered networking and collaboration.

We successfully closed some deals during the conference, thanks to the opportunity to meet face-to-face with key stakeholders. Additionally, we strengthened our partnerships in internal inspections, ATs, and LPS, recognising the future importance of the European wind industry, especially with the upcoming European elections in June.

The conference was brimming with innovative ideas across all wind fields, and we had the chance to reconnect with old acquaintances while also making new connections. However, one challenge we faced was the lack of taxis in Bilbao, which made transportation a bit tricky.

Despite the friendly competition, the conference left us with plenty of new ideas to develop and collaborations to explore. It’s evident that the market is maturing and recognising the importance of quality inspections in ensuring the sustainability and growth of the wind energy sector.

On top of that, we offer deployment operations guidance such as how to position the turbine in relation to the Sun’s angle and details to be mindful of on the field. 

After the onboarding session, we book you for an in-person training on how to operate the system safely with one of our expert pilots. This is a course that walks you through the technical details, the inspection setup as well as the post-inspection workflow.

Of course, all of this is available to you 24/7 via our online Knowledge Base Centre but we want to address questions live and Bristol is wonderful to have this kind of training session.

“But what about live support on the field later?” you might ask. Our support teams are available during business hours via email, chat and Whatsapp. If your deployment is due in another time zone, we cater for that as well! Just let us know and we will be there to support you in case you need us.
